@leafcutterjohn I spent some time on your amazing patch. I’m trying to get summing back, and in the process, I’m discovering that the first conversion is quantized to 8bit in [scale 0 255 -1. 1.] and I’m exploring this transfer function too. In effect, I got perfect reconstruction through nmf of that conversion so it works, but I am exploring how I can map differently to audio. I can share the work in progress if that interests anyone…

Just out of curiosity I tried to load higher bit depth images into jit.matrix and it seems to flatten the 24 bit png to 8 bit on loading.

in progress, so messy and undocumented. I’m exploring other importing methods

the matrix you transfer to has char as type, so that will do that. Try changing them right away to float32 to load the image in and change the mapping to a 0. 1. → -1. 1. (or leave as is) and see what you get.

ok here I got geek, as I did not get the summing to work. So I recoded everything with examples with jit.buffer~ and rescanning and bufcompose. It is undercommented but hopefully will help others than me to understand. The summing works, and it is true, as @sam.gillies said, that the results are more fun with a single appended RGB file… although your mileage may vary.

Bizarre, I cannot reproduce. For both with nmf, are you running the nmf below (#2) before reconstructing (bang on top right without numbers, oops)

I’m not getting any errors in running through each of the bits of the patch either.
